Youbert Younan was born in Karemlash. He grew up in a Christian Assyrian family. In the early days of his life, his uncle taught him the fundaments of photography, later he attended the Academy of Fine Arts at Bagdad. At that time there was no school or education in photography in Iraq, it was not considered as an expression of art as well. Younan did develop his photographic skills on his own.
During the regime of Saddam Hoessein, higher education, free expression and intellectual development was more and more restricted. As is generally known, chasing and suffocation of the Iraqi who tried to resist or even the innocent (as part of the Saddam Hoessein’s strategy) became the order of the day. As a result of this policy Younan was expelled from the Academy.
Finally Younan was forced to build up a new future somewhere else. Now he lives in Arnhem / Hollandand exercises his profession as a graphic- and web designer and works as a freelance photographer.
